Electrical and Computer Engineering Off-Campus Visits

Welcome

Faculty and staff from the Klipsch School are available to visit external groups to explain what is done on-campus in the department.  Examples of off-campus visit opportunities include:

  • Give a talk (Some examples:  What is Electrical Engineering/what do EE's do?,  What is needed for an EE degree
  • Do an educational activity:
    • Light a light:  Use a light bulb, piece of wire and a battery.  Hand out to students and have them light the bulb (let them figure it out).  Then talk about voltage/current and open and closed circuits

    • Series and Parallel:  Ask which will be brighter:  bulbs connected in series or bulbs connected in parallel

    • Strobe light/Pace makers – varying flashes with the time constant of the capacitor.  Go through equations that govern the circuit (simplified).  Solution is an exponential.  If students have the algebra, let them work through the math and find the values they need to have a flash every second, every 10 seconds.  Show the circuit, and let the strobe flash.  Relate to other uses (like cameras with flash, pace makers).

    • Light listener:  project we do in EE 111 lab.  Show them the circuit/project as what it is.  Show them, then do the circuit, and talk about what the parts do.  One part is an OP Amp set up as a differentiator.  Talk about what that does to the incoming light signal, and then demo the circuit again, and let them listen to the derivative.

    • Probability:  Talk about probability –what it is, how it’s used.  Then we do an exercise to find the probability of blocks.  (I have probability boxes made up with different colored squares  - and variable numbers of squares inside).  The object is to figure out how many squares you have, and how many of each color, just by observing the colors that show in the window.  This can extended to an exercise about a photon and it’s travel to get out of the sun.  I have other activities for probability also (black jack, poker, craps) that could also be done.

    • Do several small centers on Current, magnetic fields, simple motors, and a Van de Graff generator

  • Presentation on current capstone projects
  • Help with judging engineering or science

If you have a particular need or topic that you'd want addressed, talk to us about what you have in mind.  Do keep in mind that faculty need to teach their classes and have other duties as well, so all requests may not be possible.

For more information, please contact the Klipsch School office with the name of the group, the type of support requested, time and date the visit is needed, and who is the point of contact on the requesting end.
