- Goals:
- Upon completion of this course the student should gain an understanding of the operation and basic circuits of the common semiconductor devices and of the characteristics and basic applications of operational amplifiers.
- Prerequisites by Topic:
- Knowledge of atomic structure.
- Kirchoff and Ohm Laws.
- Circuit analysis techniques and useful theorems (superposition, voltage and current dividers, Thevenin and Norton equivalents).
- Topics:
- Linear Circuits, models for amplifiers, network theorems (1 week).
- Ideal op amps, basic circuits, practical op amps, limitations (2 weeks).
- Diodes - terminal characteristics, models, applications, physical operation (2 weeks).
- BJT - physical operation, terminal characteristics, biasing circuits (3 weeks).
- BJT - small signal equivalent circuit, single stage amplifiers with BJTs (3 weeks).
- FET - JFETs and MOSFETs, physical operation, terminal characteristics, modes of operation, biasing (2 weeks).
- FET - models, single stage amplifiers with FETs (2 weeks).
- Computer Usage:
- Students are encouraged to use the popular circuit simulation program PSPICE (available on student accessible machines) during the solution of homework problems.
